Last month Soul Revivalist Charles Bradley and co released the single Strictly Reserved for You . Now with a just a few short days till the release of the heavily anticipated Victim of Love album, which is due out April 2nd, comes the video for that the first single. With labels like Daptone, Numero, and Now Again, the Soul/Funk revivalist movement continues to move along. In 2011, with the release of No Time for Dreaming, Daptone introduced us to Charles Bradley, a former James Brown impersonator. His aged gritty vocals filled with raw passion and pain that came from a life of fighting for success in the music business quickly won over fans new and old. April 2nd Daptone and Bradley return for the follow up with Victim of Love. Here goes Strictly Reserved For You, the first single from the album.

Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band – Stay Away (Nirvana Cover)

SPIN is putting out a compilation Tribute album to Nirvana, which is to feature various musicians covering the hits. After reading over the artist that will handle this (and googling 3/4 of the groups i've never heard of) I was most ecstatic about the Charles Bradley and the Menahan Street Band's cover of "Stay Away". Surprisingly Bradley and Co. didn't just opt for a straight forward Soul Cover. They really went for the psych/garage sound that Bo Diddley was known for. The outcome is pretty damn AWESOME.

This time around we're picking up the pace and for the most part the bpm's. As a beat maker (hate saying producer) I tend to stay away from the late 70's and mid 80's Old School/Freestyle, synth heavy records. But that doesn't mean I don't listen to it. I'm from So Cal. This brand of music is what we listen to out here. As the weather gets hotter, the BPM's increase and the drums get harder. To me and my circle, this is our Summer music...whether it be at a BBQ or a Kick Back. Hopefully everyone's looks forward to Summer, like I do. Hopefully these two disc will aid in that enjoyment. Oh it's almost here. Will be delivered Saturday Morning, just in time for your bbq and summer boozing needs. For now, here's another track that will not be on the tape...but once again...it gives a feel to it.

Fathers Children - Who's Gonna Save the World (1979 Soul)

Hailing from the Adams-Morgan neighborhood, in 1973 Nick Smith, Billy Sumler, and Ted “Skeet” Carpenter created a lost document of gritty soul, concerned with its own time and place, stripped of the L.A. gloss that permeated the the group’s own 1979 “debut” for Mercury. Unreleased until now, this true freshman offering is an amalgam of sunny vocal group harmonies, fuzz-guitar solos, shimmering keys, bubbling percussion, spiritual prophecy, and dub experiments. Who’s Gonna Save The World gets the full Numero treatment, with extensive notes and scores of unpublished photos. Deluxe LP edition includes the bonus 45, “Linda Movement” b/w “Intellect” (the latter side not on the the CD).

What can I say? I'm a stickler for these type of soul albums. Whether it be the new age soul releases like Saadiq's "The Way I See it", Lee Fields' - "My World, or unreleased and remastered workings like Jean Plums Self titled unreleased debut. This time around is Father's Children 'Who's Gonna Save The World. I'm blown away by this. Not too sure what it is about these type of projects...maybe it's the nostalgia, maybe it's the fact that I'm an actual crate digger that is too young to discover unheard workings....whatever it is...I'm always like a kid in a candy store when "new" shit like this comes out. Anyways...I won't leak the project...but I will say it is well worth the $18.00 (CD) / $20.00 (LP) / $10.00 (MP3).
